Life's journey is never a straight road.
As a young man I so badly wanted it to be. Even now I desire the simplicity of mind in those who believe that all they need is to see their goals, drive to them directly and achieve them. Naivete' is a terrifically attractive mistress. But alas, there are blind corners, hairpin turns, places where you need to apply the brakes or you'll fly off into the trees and perish. Sometimes the road is so challenging that you can't admire the scenery. Then you stop and look back from a higher vantage to see how the path just traveled spools out in stunning fashion. And you admire the challenges- and your ability to navigate them.
Career, home, marriage, parenting, avocation, art- all weave in and out, requiring the focus and nerve to take the next turn. I still animate for a living, but it's not the same as before. I'm good at it, but it's not like before. My passions evolve. I care more about story than ever before. In the end the methodology of delivery for the story is merely that- a mechanism to get the payload into orbit. Clearly some rockets are more suited to different payloads, but no one in space industry mistakes the rocket for the payload. I try to keep that in mind.
That has been one of the more rewarding curves to navigate in recent years.
